AN UNFORGIVABLE MISTAKE
T he monogamy thing hadn’t been that bad. I found myself looking at a couple of chicks here and there but overall I couldn’t complain. I was a little nervous when Jodi had first moved in. I thought things might change for the worst but they’d actually gotten better. I loved sitting around, talking to her. We’d talk for hours. I enjoyed her company and companionship.
We’d grown so much closer over the past month or so. Her schedule was going to take some getting used to. She was working nights and I hated it. The 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift was killing me. The only good part about it was that she got a week off every two weeks. Lately she’d been coming home on her lunch break since the emergency room hadn’t been that busy. If it got busy while she was gone, someone paged her. Overall we were making the relationship work so I couldn’t complain.
I was running late. I was supposed to be over Jeff’s almost an hour ago. He was throwing a Halloween party and I was helping him set up for it. I wanted to come dressed as a pimp but I settled for myself. I wasn’t in the mood to be role-playing that night. I actually didn’t even feel like going.
I arrived at Jeff’s and it was packed outside. I didn’t have a place to park. I knew he was pissed. I walked in and tried to blend in with the crowd, which wasn’t easy. Everybody had on a costume and I had on jeans and a T-shirt. Jeff spotted me in no time.
“First, your ass was supposed to be here two hours ago, then you don’t even wear a costume,” he said.
“Nigga, I wasn’t supposed to be here no damn two hours ago. You’re always exaggerating about everything,” I replied.
“I asked you to come ova an hour before the party started, right?” he asked. “Yeah!”
“All right then. It’s 8:30 p.m. now. The party started at 7:30 p.m.,” he said.
Oh shit, I was two hours late. I hadn’t even realized it.
“Who actually comes to a party on time? I thought I had a lil’ time left; my bad,” I said in my defense.
“Whateva, nigga! I’m not even trippin’ anymore. The shit got done regardless,” he said.
“Jodi here yet?” I asked.
“No, not yet. Well, I haven’t seen her, if she is. Why didn’t she come with you?”
“She had to work, so she was coming straight here once she got off,” I said.
“What happened to the costume, though?” he asked.
“I really didn’t feel like coming. I feel drained. It’s like I have no energy. By the time I convinced myself to come, I wasn’t wearing any costume. I was just ready to go,” I explained.
“Well, Terry’s in the back room playing pool. You know where the bar is, so go find something to do. I’m ’bout to entertain my guests. I’ll catch up with you later,” he said.
“All right. I’m just going to go back here and holla at Terry.
